Williamsburg,PA-Ridge Road Haunt- "The Grey Spector"

by Katie Eckenrode
(Altoona,PA)

There's a road of the beaten path in Williamsburg,PA that is really haunted. I'm not too sure of the back history anymore, its been a long time since I was told the story. But there is a half human-half demon thing that walks upright yet slouched and disfigured. He is grey and scaley with bright eyes and long limbs. He's known to take dogs left out at night among other things. Only the locals know the story really, my ex was one of them. He actually lived on the road actually in a trailor off to the left at the begining of the road (which turns to dirt and does a complete circle if you turn at the right times...actually will lead you to the quarry popularly known as the blue holes (its infested with dead cows and dirty needles and old cars, don't swim there for the love of god people).

I myself have seen this thing, the 2 times I saw it it was walking into the woods off the road in front of us. Also, on this road, don't be suprised if you think there's a car ahead of you, Guess what... 9 chances out of ten its not. Lights show up that aren't there that appear to be headlights and when you get closer there is no light but the light from your own car. Be careful driving this road, many potholes, as is is old and mostly dirt and gravel. Also, watch the woods around you while driving. You see the glowing eyes of the spector darting around, and trust me, you can tell they are not a deers or any other animal like that. Really creepy place, I always have the music off, windows up, and doors locked here. Don't walk it at night, no one around there does..so you definitally shouldn't.

Sounds like it could be a bigfoot
by: Anonymous

The characterists of "The Grey Spector" are very similar to the characteristics of a bigfoot. It may be a bigfoot out there.Very interesting story.

I LIVE ON RIDGE ROAD
by: Ridge Road Resident

I moved to the Ormenia end of Ridge Road in Williamsburg, PA in 1988 and still live there today (6/21/2014). I have hiked, walked and ridden horses almost daily for most of those years, both on the trails and road, in the daylight and the dark, with company and alone, and also to the blue hole and all over those trails. Sorry, folks, no strange creatures. Saw a bobcat once and bear tracks and of course other indigenous wild life but no ghosts, specters, demons, bigfoot or any other unexplainable creature. Hate to bust your bubble but take it from a long-time resident.

I grew up on ridge road and nothing ever happened there as a kid. Many people traveled the road with motorcycles and four wheelers and hunted and I dont recall ever hearing anything about anyone seeing things. In sept 2006 my nephew came to visit from Florida and we decided to go ghost hunting and went by the book "haunted pennsylvania" by Patty A. Wilson, and we curiousity got the best of us so one night around 1 am we went back the road traveled it to both ends taking random pictures with the only light being the flash of the camera. We shut the head lights off. When we returned home we looked at the pictures we had taken and zoomed in on the photos with the orbs. We was shocked when 2 of the orbs turned out to be a ver scarey face resembling a goats head and the 2nd on looked like a man leaning up against a tree with his foot up on the tree with his knee bent smoking a cigerette. This wasnt a real man. it was a orb zoomed in and it looks as i described. I never thought for a minute we would get pictures like we did but we are true believers now. They are creepy pictures and it was not raining and there was nothing on my camera lens! Call it the "grey spector" or whatever you want but we believe it.

I grew up on ridge rd and never experienced anything and was never afraid but in sept. 2006 my nephew and some other family members and I went out at 1 am to take pictures back in the middle of the rd there r no houses or lights that far back. We took random pictures with no lights on and only the flash of the camera. Yes it was creepy but it was dark and in the middle of the woods. When we got home we looked at the pictures and saw some orbs but we zoomed in on a strange orb and it was shaped like a man leaning his back against a tree with his knee bent and foot against the tree and it appeared to be smoking a cigarette and it was ghost. It just looks like a cloud of smoke or a hug orb. There was no real man in the picture its 100 % a ghost. I have the proof. Ever since then I will not go back the road at night. Call it the grey Spector or whatever u want but It made my skin crawl and to the day when I look at the pic a get the chills.

Hummm....

Sorry, no blue hole on Ridge road. Now there is on Wertz road off of Lower Piney creek road. Look everyone...Halloween is near and some people get a kick out of making up haunted stories. I lived in this area (Royer) all my life but I never heard this story till now. Don't get me wrong....I do believe places are haunted and have witnessed first hand but really don't talk about them much unless personally asked. I don't like to cause people to be frightened because I don't think the unexplained are here to scare us at all. Now back to this story.....I do believe this story is not about Ridge Road :)

Native who has never heard of this...
by: Anonymous

First off, I think there is some confusion where this is. Ridge Road is out Piney Creek and the Blue Hole is out Clover Creek. They are on opposite sides of town. Having lived about a mile from the Blue Hole almost my whole life, I've never seen or heard anything like that. I've never spent much time on Ridge Road, so I can't really speak to that. However I have never at any point heard anyone talk about this, even when discussing hauntings in Williamsburg.

Williamsburg Resident All My Life
by: Chris

I have been a resident of Williamsburg Pa all of my life and had never heard of the spector until I read the book by Patti Wilson.Which had sparked my interest very much so considering I lived right behind the Ridge Road and "The PowerLine" on Route 866 side and me and my friends and family spent/ spend alot of time there.Being born and raised in the sticks or country whichever you prefer. We cut firewood there and had bonfires at night. We would go mudding and party there all times of the year. And people stil do to this day. I must say I have never seen a trace of any creature such as this in this area. I have been in the woods since I was 6 years old and have been hunting since I turned 12 and was allowed. I have seen every track imaginable up there that is indigenous to this area including coyote, bear, bobcat, racoon, and other carnivore and omnivore animals. Just to be honest and unbiased I want you all to know I do believe in theses unexplainable creatures seriously I do. I am just stating I have never heard of or seen anything or have heard anyone from my town or surrounding towns (royer,ormenia,clappertown,martinsburg,fredericksburg...ect) say anything remotely close to verifiable evidence of this creature existing here. Now about 20-40 miles SouthEast of this location by Raystown Lake, Trough Creek area I can defenitely vouche for some kind of like creature there.Yet the woods and surrounding areas there are very remote with no houses around for 5-15 miles and so dense in some spots you need a flashlight on a sunny clear day at noon. If anyone needs any information on how to get to the Ridge Road or any information at all just ask me. Thank you for your time.

loved the blue hole
by: Joyce

I know the blue hole very well-as a kid in the 50's-we walked out to the blue hall to go swimming. That is where i learned to "tread water" and i did it to the other side-width not length! very scary!! We were always told there was no bottom to the blue hole--but when they drained it in the 70's-we saw there definitely was a bottom. Walked that old dirt road many times--never saw or heard anything strange--but who knows--maybe i'm older than him!

hi my name is mitchell allen. i have lived at the end of ridge road torward martinsburg all of my life. i have traveled this road meny of times at day and night and i have never seen anything or heard anything. me and my buddies even stopped the car half way and shut it off but nothing had happened. meny people say that the grey spector is true but i think that it is just a mith. my cousin and i rode our bikes out ridge road one night and we did not even see a thing. yeah it was creepy but the dark is always creepy. i beleve that the spector is not true but i could be wrong. maybe he only travels the road at certain times of the year or day. but i dont know. i guess that you will just have to try it out for yourself. my oppion is if you want to see him i guess that you will just have to travel the road and try to find him. good luck on finding him because i surely did not find or see him.

BLUE HOLE, SEVEN FALLS and LADY IN GREEN
by: Ron

The Blue Hole in the 1950's was a popular swimming area. It is an abandoned quarry filled with water hundreds of feet deep and the depth of water reflecting the sunlight makes the water a deep blue color. A rusting locomotive and mining cars litter the bottom. I learned to swim there with my Uncle. Nearby is another swimming hole, named Seven Falls, in a damned up section of Clover Creek that flows under a bridge. Upstream are the seven waterfalls.

The Blue Hole at night was a lovers' lane. I am aware of at least one suicide by driving a car into the Blue Hole. Some say that the Grey Specter is the restless spirit of the man who died in the car. At least one man died by falling from the farm fields at the top of the limestone cliff opposite the dirt road and parking area.

This area is in the midst of the Allegheney Mountains and Williamsburg is in a deep valley hidden among the high Appalachian Mountain ridges running southwest to northeast. Beautiful place to growup. Plenty of supernatural phenomona from the spirits that roam the area. One of the most interesting and beautiful apparitions is the "Lady in Green." She is often seen sitting on a tree branch of very old trees. She is dressed in glowing green gown, always smiling, and beckoning observers to come up the tree. But when you do she fades away.

Ridge Road Grey Spector
by: M

Hi Katie, I live on this road and have for 50+ years. This road brings you out at Ormenia. Walk dog almost daily, traveled this road many times as a youngster, riding bicycles, cycles. Day, night, i've been on this road. I must say, I have never heard of such a thing, or saw anything strange lurking on this road. But it does make a good ghostly story. I must take my camera with me. thanks, M

It on the complete opposite side of town then the trails, you go left not right towards them when coming in town. i remember you go pass the place with all the busses and a grave yard to your right. It like veers off to the right instead of following the path left... i know a house sits in the land between the two roads if that helps. I will have 2 go up soon and actually write directions, i just know by site where to turn and whatnot. Hope this helps, will give you more info soon :)

Ridge Road Haunt in Williamsburg, PA
by: Patricia

Hi Katie,

I've been to Williamsburg many times but I have never heard about this creature or this road you're talking about. I have heard about the Blue Holes but never really ventured to find them. Is the area anywhere near Royer Mansion? Or could it be anywhere near Rails to Trails entrance in the heart of Williamsburg, PA?

I've interviewed local people about Royer Mansion, I'm going to have to venture back and see what I can dig up about this awful creature you're telling us about.

Thanks for telling us about Ridge Road and whatever is haunting the area.

Patricia
