The Tavern

When I was in High School I worked in our towns local restaurant called The Tavern on the Green in New Wilmington PA. My friend and I were closing up, I was finishing the dishes while she took out the trash. I kept hearing some one calling my name. She always called me by my nick name but this voice was using my full name. I asked her what was wrong and why she was calling me like that when she said that she wasn't calling me we heard a door in the basement slam and we ran to our supervisors home to drop off the keys and dirty linens. When we told Mary Ellen what had happened she said to me (I'm African American) that the Tavern was once part of the Underground Railroad, and escaped slaves were hid in the basement. Other people who worked there also had similar experiences.

So next time your traveling in the area why not stop for some of the Tavern's famous cheesecake and share in the history!

Ghostly Tale of The Tavern
by: Patricia

Hi Lashawnda,

I'm really sorry I couldn't get back to you sooner, I've had a weird summer with computer problems and finally it crashed, then finally I had to buy a new computer.

I want to thank you for sharing your ghostly tale about The Tavern. I've heard of many ghostly tales from what used to be known as underground railroads. They have so much history. If I'm ever traveling in the area I will be sure to stop and enjoy a meal at such an historical site.
