Held in Renovo, Western Clinton County PA, the second weekend in October every year since 1949, the PA State Flaming Foliage Festival features the grandeur of the fall color palette displayed in the Allegheny Mountain Range area of the larger Appalachian System in North-Central Pennsylvania. The festival runs from Friday through Sunday and includes talent show, dances, hundreds of craft, services, and food vendors, a parade through the town featuring the "queens" representing area high schools and climaxed by the crowning of the Flaming Foliage Queen on Sunday. Renovo is mid-way on the Route 120 "Scenic Bucktail Trail" which runs along the West Brance of the Susquehanna River from Lock Haven to Emporium. This is one of the few unspoiled stretches of wilderness in the Eastern U.S. Wildlife including deer, elk, bear, wild turkey, and grouse abound.

This is one of those festivals, that we would love to be on a holiday. I have been there during the October 2011 festival. It was the best time in my life. I hope that I can make it to the next festival.

Gotta have it!
by: Anonymous

My tradition is going straight to the cafe on wheels for a pumpkin spice cappuccino (they have tons of other flavors) and then sipping on it while enjoying the rest of the festival. I don't particularly like spice, but as soon as I tried the pumpkin spice, I was hooked-nothing like it. There is a great parade and I love walking around the variety of vendors that are there. Look forward to my tradition!

Flaming Foliage Festival 2013
by: William Conti

It's almost time again for the annual FLAMING FOLIAGE FESTIVAL in Renovo, Clinton County, PA which is held on the second full weekend of October. This year's dates are October 11, 12,& 13. As usual, the real attraction is the incredible natural beauty of the mountains as the foliage turns an incredible array of browns, yellows, reds, and more. Route 120, known as the "Bucktail Trail" runs from Lock Haven, through Clinton County town such as North Bend, Farwell, and Renovo and on into Emporium in Cameron County which is the most sparsely populated county in Pennsylvania.
Enjoy!

When you mention the dances at the YMCA and "Stouties", it leads me to think that we are around the same age and experienced Renovo during relatively similar periods. Thanks for your share.

My family spent many many years in revova when I was young. My father was born and raised in Revona and my grandparents lived there for years. Some of my best memories are in Renova: the dances at the Y, hanging out at Stouties and much much more. I remember going to the flaming foliage parade and the dances. I actually got to wear a new dress to the dance and I still have the pictures of that time. My date was a local boy and I have not seen him in many years. My grandmother swore by Dr. Frank and if you were not buried by Maxwell you did not go to heaven.
My grandparents are long gone and my dad is also deceased but I think of Renova often and remember just how much I love the area. It is nice to remember times when we were young.

Family Tradition
by: Eileen Meyers

I love this time of the year. I love that the leaves change and the air gets crisp. The best part of this all is The Flaming Foliage Festival. My mother's side of the family lives here (Linberg) so since I have been a little one I have been coming and enjoying celebration. It has been a tradition that we all show up to my gram's house on Friday and stay till Sunday.

This year will be the first time I'm bringing my two step-daughters. I have told them all about it and also have showed them all the pictures I have taken in all the years I have been coming.

I'm excited that this year I will be sharing all of this with my new family. I can't wait to get there. Friday can not get here soon enough.

It has been years my family have been visiting the Renovo FFFF - it brings our family and friends together for a fun filled weekend where we are transported to a time and place untouched by the NOW. It is somewhere we feel comfortable and at peace and we certainly look forward to many many more years of this wonderful festival. The ambiance is one which gets hold of you - the beauty of nature surrounds you with her golden glory not to mention the food is always good!

Happy 50th Anniversary!!
by: William E. Conti, West Hollywood, CA

Happy 50th Anniversary! You must have been newly-weds when this event occurred in 1961. Thank you for sharing your story of sport, wilderness, near death/tragedy,rescue, and survival in Renovo PA. I was 12 years old in 1961 and Dr. Frank Dwyer was a reliable and faithful care provider as well as an institution in Renovo for many years. His brother, Dr. John Dwyer was also a long-time physician there. He brought my mother into the world and inspired her upon her graduation from high school to begin her nursing studies at Jefferson Medical School in Philadelphia PA which was his alma mater. His son, "Sonny", also a physician, would come to Renovo periodically from Philadelphia, I believe, to perform surgeries, particularly tonsilectomys which he performed on me when I was six years old. My aunt, Alice Cleaveland who was the administrator of the Renovo Hospital at the time you were a patient and was probably one of the six nurses who looked in on you.
I hope you have a safe, enjoyable, and meaningful Anniversary celebration and stay in the Renovo area.
Regards,

Frozen Deer Hunters
by: Richard Lantsberry

Dec. 1961 my husband Richard Lantsberry and Robert Wise were found nearly frozen to death.
They we in a truck camper for 54 hrs. in 10 degree
weather with no heat.
If it wasn't for two deer hunters, Charles Rammage
and Carl Schmoke, found us and took us to the hospital in Renovo where we were taken care of by Dr.Frank Dwyer. And 6 wonderful nurses who took care of us 24 hrs a day for 11 days. We were transported back to our hometown Elyria, Oh.
We spent 5 months in the hospital We both were very lucky, we only lost half of both feet.
We plan on attending this years festival 2011. It will be their 50th anniversary on Dec 9th.
We thank God everyday.

PA Annual Flaming Foliage Festival in Renovo, PA
by: Anonymous

Hi Patricia,
I was wondering if this listing might be more easily located by individuals seeking seasonal events if it were also placed in the "PA Festivals & Events" section where you have them organized by month.

In any event, this website is amazing. There is probably nothing else like it on the web. Thank you for all your efforts on behalf of informing people of the natural beauty and unique culture of PA. (I spent a lot of time in Altoona where I had many friends while attending St. Francis University in Loretto.)

All the best,

Drilling and Wind Turbines
by: Bill Conti

Patricia,

Wow! Having been away from PA for a long time, I didn't know about the wind turbines. Where do you live? It sounds like you have been very distressed by those developments. I think we were complacent and thought that those areas were so remote that no one would ever bother them or care to go there except for camping, hunting, fishing, etc.

I hope we can at least preserve some pristine lands such as the state and national parks for the generations to come.

All the best,
Bill

Greedy Political Gains
by: Patricia

Hi Bill,

Yes, it's so upsetting what is happening to our beautiful forest and natural resources in PA. Not only is the Marcelles Shale activities ruining our natural springs and polluting our enviroment now we have to deal with all the wind turbines across our mountains ridge tops. I used to take such pride in the mountain view from my deck. Now I see those turbines standing tall across the ridge tops and all I can think of is all the beautiful timber that has been cut down and all the wildlife that has been misplaced over greedy political gains.

At this point Bill, all we can do is pray that someone will come to their senses before it's too late to save PA. You're right, we need to get out and enjoy what's left while we can.

Patricia

Response to Patricia
by: Bill Conti

Hi Patricia,

I'm glad you enjoyed my entry of Renovo's Flaming Foliage Festival. That area sure is a beautiful, unspoiled part of PA and should be regarded as a national treasure. Unfortunately, I'm afraid that politics and money may trump our regard for our children's heritage as PA has the most lax regulations regarding the disposal of contaminated water of all the states involved in the Marcellus Shale activites.

Let's enjoy it while we can.

Bill Conti
