Hill View Manor - New Castle, Pa.

During the mid 80's into the 90's I worked in a county run nursing home. My position was Director of Social Services and Activities Coordinator. As soon as I started working there I knew that there was more to the place then what you could see. I knew instantly that this place was haunted. Working there, I got to know the patients and of course, the staff. A big complaint of the staff was that no one liked working the third floor at night. They always complained of hearing noises, hearing voices or feeling cold spots in what was a very warm location in the building.

The patients always talked about seeing a little boy. It was said that if you saw this boy in your room, you were the next to pass.

The home was built in 1925 as the Lawrence Co. Poor Farm. It was a working farm for the indigent of the county. Behind it is the county pauper cemetery. The building went through many changes and a few name changes. It was turned into a nursing home in the 1960's.

I left in the early 90's and the home was finally closed down in 2004. I no longer live in the Lawrence County area so when I heard it closed, I started blogging about it on my My Space (http://www.myspace.com/micksghosts)page. Several people in that area took note of my blogs, visited the grounds and started sending me some exciting photos! They sent photos of children in the building! People looking out the windows etc. I decided then that it was time to get a team together and do an investigation! Unfortunately no one else shared my enthusiasm for the place. Finally another group did do an investigation there and found a ton of evidence. Unfortunately upon telling the owner their results, he decided to start charging people who wanted to investigate.

I have been there several times and have investigated twice. It has a rich and mysterious history. 3 people either jumped or fell to their deaths from the roof throughout the years. One person either hung - or was hung - inside the place.

The home has been investigated by several notables in the paranormal field like John Zaffis, Rosemary Ellen Guiley, Patty Wilson, Robb Demerest, Ghost Lab, Ce Ce Huntess, Zak Bagans and the GAC team and many others. All have excellent reports of evidence obtained there.

Shadow figures have been witnessed and photographed lurking in the halls and rooms. The graveyard is a hot bed of excitement if you are into the paranormal. The majority of the graves are unmarked since it is used mostly for indigents and no names.

If you are interested in checking this place out, email and I will tell you more. It is located right outside the New Castle, Pa county boarder on 65. The address is 2801 Ellwood Rd, New Castle, Pa. I can be contacted at: micksghosts@gmail.com. The place does have a web. I think it is haunted hill view.com but not sure. Like I said unfortunately, they charge a few now to go into the place.

Please do not go there without permission. It is posted private property and the police have been instructed to arrest any trespassers. It is unfortunate that some people are just out for a buck these days and the paranormal seems to be an easy target.

my mom passed away at hillview in 2001. I still live 5 minutes away from the building. I have never gone back but my children spent the nite on one of the tours. my son, who is very levelheaded, said you would have to see it to believe what goes on in there. my daughter told me my moms chair is still in the basement and was very scary to see. even when I visited my mom I had odd feelings about the place. I don't think I could even drive up to the front door. I still feel uneasy when I drive past on rt 65.

October 2012
by: Anonymous

We went last October to a ghost hunt at the Manor. Up on the 3rd floor in the front large room of the hospital ward there are 2 old radiator heaters covered with metal casings. While in there doing EVP's we were startled by a large bang from the corner like someone was lifting the metal on the radiators. It took 2 people to move the heater enough to make the same sound but no one was in that corner at the time of the noise. I would love to go again and investigate.....

If you are into paranormal research, you will not be dissappointed. I've been investigating for a few years now and this is the most active location I have been to. Candy and Jason are great hosts also. I was a bit put off by the cost at first, but after visiting I can tell you, not only is it worth the money, but the money is going towards the lease, structural preservation, and historical preservation. Hillview Manor is Disneyland for a paranormal investigator. And it costs a lot less. BTW, the spirit of Eli is,in fact, there. Eli lived there when it was a poor farm. He got drunk one very cold night and passed out in the basement. He died from exposure and was found by a couple of buddies 2 days later. Or so the story goes... We had an interesting flashlight session with him.

I remember going in there with my grandfather in the 80's when my great grandmother lived there and i definitely remember a odd creepy feeling, i was a very young kid at the time and never really had any paranormal experiences at the time that i can recall. but throughout my life have had numerous, most of them being in new castle... i have lived in many places in the u.s. but for some reason have had a very high percentage of experiences in new castle. i dont know whether its coincidence or if its all the old houses and buildings here, or if its just me thats haunted

My experience.
by: Jim K.

I went on a "ghost hunt" st Hill View Manor last month. I was very skeptical, and was pretty sure it was just a money making scam. I was wrong. Our team of 4 got lots of EVPs from thus place. I knew the minute I walked inside that there was activity here. The atmosphere was electrical. During the tour, I felt very sad and the air was heavy. We had some experiences in the basement...on the new side where the patients belongings were left. These were genuine experiences without scientific explanation. I had the pleasure of meeting Candy. She is also very genuine. She is what I call a "kindered spirit", and I felt an indescribable connection with her. Those of you who don't routinely go on 'hunts" might be put off by the price. Trust Mr, compared to the other popular sights, Hill View is a value.

by: Anonymous

The official website states that the cost is $650 for 10 people or less and after that is $65 per person over 10. This is average for such a highly publicized site and I don't think it is too much at all. It looks very interesting and I would love to bring my team in here to investigate.

I was an LPN in the 90's and I worked evenings and nights on all of the floors. There are a great many stories to tell and yes I remember dear Jimmy. He was a sweet heart. The second and third floors is where the most strange things happened. The second floor is where the employee lunch room was and frequently I would see reflections of someone walking down the hall, when I'd go see who it was no one would be there. Once ( on the second floor) I was going from the east wing to the west wing a cloudy form passed through me...... Brrr was that cold. When I turned around to see what it was it was gone. Did I mention it was summer and we had no A/C? So many stories, I miss the old place and would love to go back for a visit.

My family recently visited this Site. They really
enjoyed the Hill View Manor. Yes, they found it
spooky. Our family lived in an old farm house over
100 yrs old and we also had a team of paranormals
from the University of Pitts. investigate the abnormal shadows, cold spots in a cellar room, lights that were turned on and off. They found
4 spirits that lived in this old home. I do believe they are with us. Thanks for your input.

by: Anonymous

Found this site after googling Hill View Manor...for my own curiosity! I beleive in ghosts and its very interesting to see the different experience people have. And I hope this isnt deleted for anything that I might comment as "inapropriate" Just sharing my personal expereince.
Someone mentioned, smelling roses...its a fact,...when some people pass..there is a smell of roses..why? I still wonder at times and no one I know has ever been able to answer that. It could be a past persons smell/fragrant thy use to wear ...It could also be someone/ghost who is re-capping the time of their death...As for Ghost Hunters I beleieve>>>Zak? and his crew....there is at least one episode(cant remember which) but these guys do use holy water to cleanse themselves before and after each paranormal research. Please take precautions when exploring buildings/sites, you are unfimiliar with and your interests is mainly to find the paranormal.....it is a proven fact...people can be possessed!
It would be a great experience to tour this site just for its history...and if to run into paranormal activity...would just be icing on top!

I believe most group homes are haunted.
by: Anonymous

I am a retired nurse who lives in Ky. I have worked in several nursing homes and most of them have spirits. I have seen residents talking to "that man in black" or asking "who is that woman over there in white". I have had patients who were in their right minds tell me things that they've seen in the buildings that would make the hairs on my neck stand up. Not to mention what I've experienced myself. I have no doubt about Hillview Manor. I live near the Waverly Sanitarium and also believe it's haunted as well. Anytime you have that many people living in a building and so many deaths, there's bound to be something left over...whether good or bad.

Grew up in Lawrence co
by: G.S.

I lived in Lawrence co. for my 1st 18 yrs. My Grandpa lived there his entire life. He had a friend who lived in Hillview, an ex co-worker I believe, it has been so many years. Grandpa used to say the placed "spooked the bejesus out of him". I had forgotten this.

The one time my Grandpa went to visit the friend that I went with him my grandfather made me wait in the car. I can't remember much but I remember being parked there wondering what was creepy. Anyway, no hard facts. Just an odd memory that hides away in your mind until something prods it to the surface. Seeing Ghosthunters listing for tonight advertising Hill View investigation pushed this memory from my brain.

I worked the night shift at Hill View for sveral years and I always seen something or smelt the scent of roses. I mainly worked the North wing but I have worked the other floors several times. I remember sitting at the 2 West Nurses Station and a little old lady walked through the doors from the hallway and stopped and looked at me and proceeded back the hall on the 2 west wing. I got up from my charting and went to see who it was and she couldnt be found. I went back to the Nurses Station and called the Supervisor on North Wing to come up. We both went back through the rooms and TV room and Bathrooms and couldnt find the Lady. Still to this day I can see what she looked like and what she was wearing. I have plenty of stories I can tell about the place. I want to tour the Hill View Manor, Im going to get a group of people ready to tour around August 2011. Cant wait, Im so Excited!!!

You're right, those two comments did slip by me. I want to thank you for drawing my attention to those two comments. I honestly had no idea they were there. That was why I couldn't understand why you wrote to me yesterday accusing me of being bias. If you scroll down you will see those comments are now deleted. I'm sure there are more in other areas that slipped by me and if you or anyone notices any I would really appreciate it if you'd let me know. I am constantly getting these types of comments and it is so frustrating and time consuming, yesterday I had three that I had to delete.

There was a period of time that I didn't know how to control the comments I received. I could control the submissions but not the comments. When I finally did figure out how to control them I had to go through and delete many.

You are also right that I have never met this lady that owns Hillview Manor. I feel so bad that people tried to slander her name on my website. If you know her personally I would appreciate it if you would please tell her I'm so sorry about this and it's been corrected.

Patricia,

If you edit/delete comments that you find bullying or hurtful, as you say you do, you obviously missed a couple.

Refer to:

It's A Hoax

and

Crazy Lady of Hill View
By: Anonymous

It appears to me that these would fit both of those criteria. Especially with all of the media exposure regarding internet bullying and harrassment.

Have you ever met the woman that runs Hill View Manor? Or have a basis for allowing those comments to be posted? While I have! And my group and I found her to be very gracious, professional and extremely knowledgeable about the location.

Guidelines
by: Patricia

The first thing I want to point out here is, this in not a free and open forum. This website belongs to me, I own it. Therefore, I have the option to choose what will and will not be published. I have invested a lot of my money, time and effort into making this website a family-friendly site that I'm proud of owning.

You are right, I do edit and/or delete any submissions or comments that I feel might offend someone or hurt someone's feelings. I will not tolerate a bully or anyone using politics or religion to start conflict. I also will not tolerate the use of vulgar language. Therefore, if you or anyone else comes here to start conflict of any kind there is no sense in wasting your time submitting to this website because it will just be deleted without a second thought.

There are plenty of free open forums, even PA forums, that permits anyone to stand on their little soap box and rant and rave about whatever put a hair up their butt that day. I'd suggest you and your friends search out these places to express your views or play your silly games of trying to make fun of or bully someone, because you are not going to impress anybody here.

If and when you and your friends are ready to contribute positively and maturely to this website you may begin to find that you can take pride in offering positive feedback. Remember the golden rule, if you can't find anything nice to say to someone or about someone, just don't say anything at all.

Investigated Hill View 2010
by: Anonymous

Hi,

I am a member on a paranormal team, and we investigated hill View Manor last year (2010).
My first experience which to this day haunts me, is when I was with another female member as we were setting up the video camera on the third floor. Nobody was there but us, and we immediately (within 3 minutes) heard someone running down the dark hallway towards us and stopping just feet away! We were stunned... and then it started again... and then to top it off, the fast approaching footsteps were coming from the other end of the L shaped hallway.

My legs felt like jello and my hands shook as I continued to set up the video camera on the tripod. Finally, I had to leave that floor and get myself in check before us going back again to finish setting up the equipment.

I am scheduled to go back there again, and I am already feeling that lump in my throat just thinking of going back on the third floor a year later. Believe it or not, I am hoping the rushing of those footsteps at me come again, and this time I will definitely not leave as quickly as before! I feel more prepared this time around knowing that this place is truly haunted!

My name is Jeremy Wiley I am co founder of The united Paranormal Investigators Association. We were the first team to investigate Hill View Manor. Durring the first year of investigating before it was opened for tours both candy and gary were members of my team. I know them both personaly. Due to personal resons neither is a part of the team but at least for awhile co ran the building and now It is only candy who is running the investigations there. The building is a great place to investiagte and although I have not been there in about a year the activity it seems has been staying strong. Im not sure of the price but do suggest going there if you can afford it. Please keep in mind leasing, eletric, insurance etc all costs alot of money and any serious investigators should ignore any facebook drama and focus on the location.

Are they leasing it together?? Ive known Gary all my life as he's from my neighborhood, and he married by best friend Hollie's mom years ago, so Im wondering if maybe he can get me in there. Really Cool Place!
by: cheryl@entitiesinc.com

I recently did an investigation here, and in defense of Hill View and of Candi i have to say, Candi leases Hill View, if she didn't lease it and provide us the opportunity to investigate people wouldnt be so interested, and we wouldn't all have the opportunity to conduct a safe, legal, investigation, and just how does Candi manage to lease this place and make it possible for us, she charges, she has to. Otherwise the owner of this property and the local police wouldn't allow anyone in or might sell it to someone who will bulldoze it, so stop complaining about the money, someone has to pay the owner off.
Its not a bad deal honestly.

And this place does have a lot of activity, it's a really cool place, you really need a whole weekend to really explore everything. So much history here.

As with Hill View, there have been many many people pass on from this location, and I have heard that part of our facility was once used for a mental ward. Cool stuff!

mom was a lpn here
by: Brian

my mom worked there as a nurse for many years when i was a kid , when my dad would drive there to pick her up at work we would go inside to the nurse's station to see my mom and she would take me around to meet some of her favorite residents . i know now that most were mentally ill but at the time as a kid i was always scared and felt like something was going to happen to me while i was there . my mom is still alive but dosen't talk much about working there. i want to come see the place again and maybe take some pictures. i always knew there was something creepy about that place and the people that lived there

Awesome investigation
by: Complete Paranormal Services

We investigated Hill View Manor on August 14th 2010 We capture a shadowy figure on video on the 3rd floor, heard many audible voices break the air and captured multiple EVP. We like Hill View Manor so much we have already booked another weekend in May 2011.

Hill view
by: Anonymous

I investigated at Hill View in july, and there is so much activity pulsing through that place. I am a fanatic, but money is a problem. It's very unfortunate that they charge an arm and a leg just to investigate. I've experienced things there that I may not get to experience again, even though I reside in New Castle, and have all my life. I can't believe it is all about the money now, instead of the spirits.

My grandfather was a patient
by: Kira Rizzo

I remember Hill View Manor from visiting my grandfather when i was younger. My grandfather died in the late 90s, at the Ellwood City Hospital, but spent many of his later years at Hill View. I remember always feeling uncomfortable going there to visit, not because of the patients, the staff was always nice, but I knew even as a young person, that Hill View Manor was haunted. I don't remember ever seeing anything, but I would always feel like someone was watching me, or a cold spot. I've always been a believer of ghost, too many incidents not to believe, I've always believed that ghost can be good or cause harm. I never as a young person, thought the ghost watching me meant harm, just curious. I've always been "sensitive" to paranormal activity. My friends and I a couple of years ago, did a day "ghost hunting", never went into the building, but walked around the grounds, and even doing that you could see people looking out windows, or in the stairwells. The one that stands out the most to me is, in the back of the manor, you walk down some steps to get to a door. If you look up the steps in the door, there was an older lady looking down at us, when I saw her she waved. After my shock, I waved back. She seemed to smile and disappear. I will never forget that day. I would love to go into the building and walk the halls, as I have previous memories there. I also currently work with a lady that had worked in the cafeteria up until the day the manor closed.

History of the past
by: Dr. paul

Hill View seems to be another fixture of time gone by. In the Commonwealth of PA, there are many of these aged buildings. It seems that Each ZCounty had at least one of these facilities, some had two. I had worked in one of these facilities that were once the homes of the indigent and poor people of the commonwealth. The cemetaries have history in them and the deceased seem to be neglected. Along with these county facilities there were also state facilities for people that were deemed mentally ill or mentally retarded. Many of these facilities are abandoned by the state. Many people lived, died and were burried at these facilities. It is no wonder why the dead do not rest.

Surreal
by: Anonymous

It's almost surreal seeing the place I remember driving up to as a child in the 70's. My grandmother used to work there as a cook. I remember her speaking of this place in a negative manor but don't recall all the exact details but I do remember her mentioning that not all the staff treated the residents there with respect and dare to say, unkindly. Just driving up the drive to this place made me feel very uncomfortable. Now I know why.

I've always been fascinated by the paranormal and wouldn't be surprised to find this place one of paranormal activity.

I would almost venture to say that, due to my own curiosity, I would like to spend an entire 24 hours inside this establishment to experience what my grandmother experienced working there. Just driving by this place would make almost anyone feel like something wasn't quite "right" about this place.

Hi, it is now 12:11 A.M. on October 24 2010 i have watched the last 2 episodes on the travel channel about the haunting of Hill View Manor, and I have to say that being born and raised in New Castle PA and living only 15 minutes from there truly amazes me, I have been informed through internet that there was supposed to be walk through tours of the building and grounds on saturday night, but I as well as many others have cam up there to find it was just a hoax, I am very interested in touring the building and grounds, As I have been completely fascinated with Paranormal activity...... I hope we can arrange something so that I as well as the public can get to see this magnificent dwelling with alot of past history.... I am very excited!

any comments for me about this can be directed to one of my emails.... chila0729@hotmail.com plz respond and thank you so much for your time

I am interested in doing a paranormal tour or investigation at Hill View, but their website is not up to date and it provides NO information regarding tours or investigations. Who do I need to contact regarding visiting Hill View? Do they offer tours to the public?

Hill View Manor Tour
by: Nate Y

I recently went on a paranormal tour of Hill View Manor and I must say that there is a lot of paranormal activity. I was able to hear a lot of EVPs, I believe I caught something on my camcorder (I haven't had the time to look through it all yet), and those third floor noises are fact. It was such an experience for me to do something like that since I have always been fascinated with the paranormal, and now I see myself becoming more involved.

I was happy to stumble upon this write up and hopefully maybe could share more.

Hill View Manor & Submissions
by: Patricia

Hi Mick,

I'm so glad to see that the submission problem finally worked out. Support has been running tests and told me that the problem had to be on your end. I was going to send you an email to let you know.

I'm happy that you finally got to share your ghostly tale of Hill View Manor, I know a lot of visitors will be excited to read about it.

I'll be so glad to get this knee operation over with and get back on my feet to go to some of these places and have some fun investigating. Let me know when you and your team plan on investigating the White Lady of Wopsy Mountain I might be healed enough to join you.

Glad to see you back,

Patricia
